5 Tips for Fall Roof Maintenance
In Houston, the calendar may be the only thing indicating that fall has arrived. The leaves aren’t turning yet, and any “cold fronts” that swing through only stay long enough to tease us. (Why are we still surprised by this every single year?) Regardless, fall is here! And this season can serve as a check-point for roof maintenance that helps prolong the life of your roof. Here are five things you can do this fall to protect your roof—and your home—for years to come.
1. Trim Your Trees
Trim back branches that are low-hanging near your home, or that rest on your roof. Branches that fall during strong winds or storms can damage your roof. It’s better, and more affordable, to take care of the potential threat rather than the aftermath. Plus, you’ll reduce the number of leaves and pine needles that will clog your gutters.
2. Clean Your Gutters
Clogged gutters prevent water from properly flowing off your roofline. If water splashes back onto your roof as a result of clogged gutters, your roof may crack, mold, or experience other forms of damage. Cleaning out your gutters in the early fall before the leaves and pine needles tumble out of the trees helps prevent your gutters from becoming clogged. Be sure to keep an eye on your gutters throughout the season and clean them out sporadically if needed.
3. Install Gutter Guards
Gutter guards are a helpful tool if your gutters clog easily, or you want to reduce the amount of time you spend cleaning out gutters. Gutter guards are affordable caps that cover your gutters. There are small holes in the caps that allow water to get through, but prevent larger debris like leaves and acorns from falling inside.
4. Get an Inspection
The fall season is a great time to have a roofing contractor come out and inspect your roof. They can identify and address minor problems to protect your roof from further damage.
5. Invest in Small Repairs
We encourage all homeowners to invest in minor roof repairs as quickly as possible. Roof damage that goes unaddressed becomes a major issue that will be more complicated and more expensive to fix. Head into the winter season with a strong roof by taking care of minor repairs now.
